The bombings began on 10.08.08 by the air forces and by the artillery, I saw it with my own eyes, it was about 7 am and lasted until 7:30 am. At 12 in the afternoon tanks entered the village, followed by the troops wearing Russian uniforms comprised of Russians, Ossetians, Cossacks and Chechen armed men. On 13.08.08 they came to me and requested to given them my own automobiles. I gave them my "tricycle" (the so called "trangaletka") and tractor. They also took away from my house TV set, stereo system, electric hair drier and oth. That evening I hid myself in the yard near to my house. In the evening of August 13th I noticed how a jeep, the so called "willis", has approached my house, three armed men wearing Russian uniforms have disembarked the jeep they were accompanied with two dogs of the German shepherd breed. They were searching for the population who were hiding in the houses and the adjacent territory. Me and 10 of my co-villagers were forced to leave the village and walk all the way to Igoeti from Tkviavi, through yards and fields.
I witnessed how they burned houses of Tamaz Kapanadze, Zaza Razmadze and Misha Melitauri. Melitauri Misha, Chokheli Gogia and Melitauri Shaqro (78 years old) were first murdered and afterwards they burnt their houses.
They set Demetrashvili's house on fire, the population was able to put it off, however the combatants set the house on fire for the second time.
My co-villagers who were in the field – Vano Chikhladze, Korinteli Roin and Kapanadze Tamaz (Kapanadze still remains there), told me that armed men wearing Russian uniforms took with them about 30 women and men via a minibus allegedly for the purpose of cleaning up Tskhinvali. Since then nobody has seen these 30 people.

A Resident of Variani Village
I saw houses were bombarded. There were standing about seventeen men not far from me when a bomb was dropped. All of them fell down. Two men died at that moment; others are wounded and they are in critical condition till now. We were constantly under fire, sleepless, scared to go out. At last, we left taking nothing with us, even a handbag or some clothes. I left my passport there as well. Now I am dependent on humanitarian aid.
My mother-in-law still remains there. Our house has been looted. My mother-in-law was at home but they didn't let her do anything and took our music center and TV. They were looking for money and gold but there were neither of them there. I don't know if anything has happened after that

Patara Garejvari

I am Nino Chalauri, 18 years old. Live in village Patara Garejvari, Gori region, and study in Tbilisi in Technical University. I want to share my story with you. On August 8, 2008, when the war started up, I and my family did not leave our house. We were standing the tension and bombardment for five days. At nights we were hiding in the basement. On August 12, 2008, on the cease-fire day proclaimed by Medvedev, the whole village was celebrating. I was thanking the God for our survival. However, for me the war started on August 13.
On August 13, 2008, at 3 p.m., I and my brother were in and our mother was cooking a dinner. Suddenly, the car stopped near our house and seven armed men get out of it. They started shouting "we will shoot you up". We stood motionless and rose up our hands, but our dog rush out and started barking at them. The dog was shot down. One of them aimed the gun at me and ordered to show everything around to them. They took me to the second floor, started beating me down and yelling at me. They took two mobile phones, DVD, computer, video, golden stuff we had, money (250 Gel). They were breaking down everything they could not take with them, glasses of doors and windows, and yelling at me and abasing me all the time, calling me "bitch, Georgian swine". They beat my mother and brother (father was not in) and wanted to carry me off as well. They were repeating "such a good girl, get into the car". I do not know how I got such strength, but I pulled out a knife from my pocket, placed it against my throat and tried to threaten them with suicide. However, they took away the knife and beat me again, punching and kicking me with gun handles. Later on, they left the room. I thought they left for good and all. I opened the door and casted a glance outside, they threw out the knife towards me immediately. God saved me that time, the knife got stick into the door. They got up to the second floor once more and when they noticed mine crossing myself, they got very angry. They broke out into abuse and beat me again. The dragged me down by the hair and were pushing me to follow them. My mother was begging them not carrying me off. By the grace of God, I am alive and with my family today, although as refugee.
Later they washed up, I do not know why, sang Russian song and left.
I am in Tbilisi now, with my family, in the state school # 170. Right after our arrival people started taking care of us. The doctor checked me up and prescribed some medicines. I am visited by the psychologist and priest as well.
The pupils are also visiting us and cheering us up. The signs of gun handles are still visible at me and my brother. I know those signs will disappear soon, but fear, feebleness and humiliation are those feelings left after August 13, and they still bother me. I am taking some medicines, and they take care of me, but those memories are like heavy burden over my shoulder. Additional burden is uncertain life of a refugee.
Via this letter, I what to show everybody the face of the brutal conquers we deal nowadays. I know, for sure, that I am not going back to my village. I do not want to live in that house anymore, in the house I was beaten so heavily, even if I am in position to be somewhere else. My brother is more positive, but I cannot forget that horror. I am sure if I am back, everything around will aggravate my bad memories.
I would like to meet either ombudsman or state representative. I know there are a lot of indigent people and they all need support and assistance. I need it as well. The God saved me and now I need support from the people.

- We are from lower Nikozi. We left amidst cross-fire. During the shooting as we got very scared the village started to get deserted and people were leaving; every time it got a little bit quieter – we used to go back. Finally explosions became so violent that now children were in panic and we decided to leave. The next day the road was blocked. We left, reservists were taken and they were followed by bus, which we took.
I have no idea about the condition of my house. My in-laws (father-in-law and mother-in-law) stayed there and I don't even know how they are. We were able to contact them briefly only once and they said nothing is happening so far. There are lots of robberies. There are burglaries of houses. They are saying if the hose is descent (looks good from outside), they're going in and robbing it, but as for destroying, I think…well, I don't know. I was speaking on a cell phone, and the connection was bad. The only thing we ask "What is the situation, how are you?"- like that. They are saying they go out in a yard at night and staying at home during the day. When it's little bit quiet, we are coming – they said – because usually shootings used to occur at night, but I don't know now.
